Week 2 in Rookie was all about focus on the fundamentals. As we moved to our new home at Sterling Field, all 16 teams now have a quality game field and bathroom (parents are applauding). Old Man Winter strikes again as the players endured chilly 50 degree weather (-40 degrees from last week) and 25-30 mph wind gusts. Before practice began, all players stretched and jogged to help losen up our muscles especially on this cold day. Today, all 16 teams sharpened their skills for a full hour focusing on throwing, fielding, hitting and base running. Drills included proper throwing technique, fielding "ready" position, "gorilla grounders" using the "alligator technique," proper hitting stance and keeping our eye on the ball. Coaches then used game time to help players utilize the skills that were practiced earlier. The players showed real hustle and enthusiasm during games. I know I saw a few potential Derek Jeter's (this hurt me to write because I'm a Red Sox fan) and Big Papi's (the Big Papi of 2004) out there today. As the weeks go by, the players will continue to get better. More importantly we stick to our moto, "DO YOUR BEST AND FORGET THE REST!." See you next week.
