Arete Award

2011 Arete Award Giovanna Dionicio with Dan Doyle

"Arête," the Greek term for competing energetically but within the rules - the importance of sportsmanship and honorable competition. Each year we ask the coaches to nominate a player from their team for the Arete Award.

The Arete award was established by Dan Doyle who is the founder and executive director of the Institute for International Sport at URI. Mr. Doyle is a graduate
of Bates College where he was co-captain of the varsity basketball team. He holds a Masters degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, and honorary doctorate degrees from Bridgewater (MA) State College and the University of Rhode Island. The accomplishments of Mr. Doyle are too long to list here, but his full and impressive biography can be found at http://www.internationalsport.com/ddoyle/dfbio.cfm.

Mr. Doyle proposed a set of criteria for the players to be nominated. The following are the characteristics that a player needs to display to be nominated
for the award:

  • Try to be the hardest worker on your team
  • Try to be the most enthusiastic on your team
  • Care about your teammates; be supportive and never back stab your fellow
    players
  • Put team goals ahead of personal goals
  • Learn the fundamentals of the game
  • Display good sportsmanship
  • Have great fun

Past winners of the Arête Award are:

Marcus Apter - 2005
Will Burns - 2006
Garrett Clare - 2007
Vinnie Gagliardi - 2008
Kyler Cubbage - 2009
Eric Bienstock - 2010

Congratulations to Giovanna Dionicio , winner of the 2011 Arête Award, for exemplifying the
ideals set forth by Mr. Doyle.
