What is the right size bat for my 8 year old? He is using a -9 but I feel it's too light for him. He's a bigger kid for his age and think he can go up, but everyone is telling me not to. Thanks.

with the -9 what is the length of the bat your son is using? Is he using a 27(-9)? He could go up to a 28 or 29 and use a -10 or -11 and still swing the same weight and get better plate coverage. My son, who is a 10 year old, use a 29(-12) last year and might go up a tick this spring? I think a good idea for any swings he might get this winter in the cages is to use a wooden bat with an equal length to what he has been using(ie. 27). The wooden bat usually has a 6-8 differential. This way he is working with a heavier bat at the same length and the wood will give him a truer feel. I think the important thing is that your son feels comfortable and his swing, assuming it is a good one, stays the same as he moves up in bat size.
I found out through my daughter who is using a size 28(13) works well for her and she's about 4ft tall. She tried a size29(13). Did not help her swing. It's definitely as others have stated, how comfortable he or she feels with the swing of bat. Also 27 too small.
